Ellsworth Air Force Base is home to the 28th Bomb Wing and has a population of over 8,000 people. The base is located near Rapid City, South Dakota and trains combat squadrons using such aircraft as the P-51 Mustang, the B-25 Mitchell, and the P-61 Black Widow. Upon arrival at Ellsworth, check in at the housing office which is located across the street from the shoppette for a list of rental homes, homes for sale, and apartment listings. The 28th Civil Engineering Housing Office is located at 3025 Lincoln Drive or can be reached by calling DSN 675-2568. Ellsworth currently has three housing areas with over 1,000 housing units offering three and four bedrooms. Centennial Estates is soon to move to privatized housing to offer a better selection to those seeking both on and off post housing. If you are a single individual, dorms are available offering over 700 units. The housing office will have a waiting list, if applicable, and will now what BAH rates apply according to rank. If arriving with a pet, be sure and check for off-post housing that allows pets. Many facilities will charge an extra monthly fee to keep pets on premises. Kennels are also available on post.
The Douglas Public School District offers smaller classes with only 18 students allowed per class in the elementary schools and no more than 25 in the middle and high schools. Douglas services those children living on base. The school year typically begins in late August and continues until mid-June. If living off post, children can register with the Rapid City Area School District. The 34th Bomb Squadron relocated to Ellsworth in 2001 from Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.
